Territorial Seed
Gardeners have been drawn to the Willamette Valley for its healthy, fertile soil and ample, clean water supplies. Territorial Seed Company found its niche nicely in amongst the foothills of the Cascade Mountains in the Cottage Grove area. Founded in 1979 by Steve Solomon, Territorial set out to improve people’s self-sufficiency and independence. Steve accomplished this by enabling gardeners to produce an abundance of good tasting fresh-from-the-garden food 12 months a year.
By 1985, Steve sold the company to current owners, Tom and Julie Johns, who now have successfully established the company as a premier seed supplier for the home gardener. Since setting its roots, Territorial has grown and blossomed into a national, mail order garden seed retailer with a catalog outlet store, 44-acre research and trial farm, downtown administrative offices and call center, and seed production facility all located in the Cottage Grove vicinity.
Territorial Seed Company’s growth and success is partially due to the availability of reasonably-priced, developed and undeveloped real estate in the area. With diverse real estate needs from certifiable organic farmland to industrial locations and a convenient corporate headquarters, Cottage Grove has proven to be an ideal home to the company. Convenience to a major interstate artery, I-5, and proximity to Eugene and Corvallis, which are both hubs of higher education, offers a healthy workforce of professionals as well as laborers to fuel the varied employment opportunities at Territorial.
Cottage Grove offers a family-friendly community with a well-developed infrastructure, supportive business environment and lots of room for growth. Territorial Seed Company sees great promise for its future in Cottage Grove.
